Actively retiring….those words mean so many different things at different times.
Just when we start getting a grove together, we get news that someone has quit and we have to go back home for an extended period of time to train again….and it’s okay. No one knows as much about our business as we do. It’s hard to train on everything that can come up and on every troubleshooting situation.
This time it is our wine maker. That’s a pretty important job for a winery! Our Operations Manager is new to the job as well, so there is a lot of training that Denny has to do. I am usually the one having to take on the role after someone’s exit, but this time it is him. I am in the support role to be content at home when I really just want to take our camper somewhere. It doesn’t matter how far away, but away enough that we aren’t working so much. When we’re at home, we work. It’s part of who we are.
Plans are on hold, and I need to be quiet about taking the camper out. That is how I am supporting him during this time when he is frustrated too about our change of plans for the fall; this first season of our active retirement!
Now we were able to get away to the yacht club and to the sailboat a few times, they just couldn’t be for extended periods of time.
On a greater note, we were able to do a Zoom board meeting from our camper on one weekend getaway without any issues using our Moxie hot spot! This is another positive step: we can do meetings from wherever we are!
We are experiencing the “Actively” part of our retirement. In time, these “active” periods will occur less and less, but for now, we are continuing to lay the foundation for a greater retirement.
